Self Care is NOT Selfish

by Madison Dookheran

In today’s day and age many people would say that caring for yourself is selfish- but it’s not!

Unfortunately, many of us tend to forget that we need to care for ourselves just as much as we care for everyone else. Trying to balance going to work, going to school, keeping friendships, and keeping relationships leads to having jam packed schedules with very little time for self care. Not having time for yourself with lead to stress, anxiety and at times, even depression.

Making time for self care is important in keeping a healthy, well balanced life style. It is only meant to better the relationship you have with yourself, once you are treating yourself well, you are going to treat everyone else well! We often think self care is a luxury when in fact, it should be a priority.

Here are 3 ways you can self care even while having a jam packed schedule:

  1. Find out what relaxes you

The first step to self care is finding out the best way you can relax. Everyone is different so this step will vary but you can try reading a book, taking a bath, being creative, practice meditation and or yoga. Once you find out what keeps you relaxed, try to do it for at least 15 minutes per day.

  1. Live a healthy lifestyle: completely

You do not just need to eat healthy and exercise in order to live a healthy life. Yes, you should be eating healthy and exercising daily but you should also practice getting atleast 8 hours of sleep every day. You should also cut off toxicity from your life, whether it is food, drugs, or people!

  1. Nurture your spirit

Everyday you should write at least 5 things that made you happy or 5 things that you weren’t upset about. Once you start thinking positively, you will start to notice a difference in your life. Things will slowly change for the better you will soon begin to enjoy everyday no matter how busy and hectic things get.
